Protagonist of an amazing industrial development, which gave it the peculiarity of modern dynamism, Varese, even if it goes on sharing the stimuli and ferments of the near city of Milan, has been able to maintain its atmosphere of a city with a human face. Varese, garden city, more than a nickname is an image, which well defines this city surrounded by green hills animated by hundreds of villas and gardens. It was really on one of these hills, the Campigli Hill, that at the beginnings of the XX century it was built a great tourist centre connected to the city by a funicular. A great urban-architectural project, achieved according to the laws of the then current Art Nouveau. The Palace Grand Hotel, designed by Giuseppe Sommaruga in 1911, represented its crucial point and the only building which has maintained its function throughout the whole century.
